St Patricks Day Snorkel – Great Success

Mar 20 2012 Posted by Office Administraton

The annual St Patricks Day Snorkel around Dalkey Island was held last Saturday, all proceeds from fundraiser are being donated to the RNLI and we managed to raise over 5,500 Euro.

I would like to thank everyone who took part either by attending, donating raffle prizes, buying raffle tickets, donating to the bucket shakers and more importantly for taking part in the Snorkel.

Fearing that the day might be blown out or rained upon as forecast by Met Eireann, a welcomed sunny Dublin bay morning greeted us all from Coliemore Harbour. A total of 107 participants turned up on the day and from the onset there was much demand for registration and tagging of snorkelers and as the crowds waited for the offshore support to arrive, an eager bunch waited on the harbour wall, but at 9:20 the five boats approached their standoff positions around the island and the Snorkel began on time at 9:30.

Thankfully there were no incidents, and the crowds that watched over the Snorkelers cheered on the approach of the RNLI RNLB Anna Livia as she approached up the Dalkey Sound. While the crowds watched from the viewing point above the harbour, enjoying their soup and sandwiches, a steady flow of snorkelers continued to make their way around the island with the last pair entering the water just after 11.

Marlin in the water

The event was more about fundraising than the Snorkel but that didnt stop James Scallon from Irish SAC or Willie Siddall from Oceandivers getting around the Island in under 41 minutes.

Each club had a great turn out with Oceandivers leading the way with 14 members but on a percentage of club Members participating in the Snorkel, Marlin SAC was awarded the Anne Burrows Memorial perpetual trophy for 2012.

A great day was had by all, and I wish to thank everyone that made this day happen and who ensured that everything ran so smoothly, fortunately the majority of this praise must go to the family members, friends and members of Marlin SAC but then again without the help of everyone else this day would not have been such a great success, so thank you all.
