Limerick’s oldest scuba diver, Ronnie Hurley, celebrated his 80th birthday with his fellow Limerick Sub Aqua Club members at a surprise party in the Locke Bar on Friday.

A founder member of Limerick Sub Aqua Club in 1960, Ronnie has been scuba diving for over 50 years, taking up the sport when he was 26 years old. He continues to be a fully, active diver, having dived most recently on the 3rd July2011 with his fellow club members and also in September 2011 and May2012 in Lanzarote. He is one of Ireland’s oldest scuba divers but has no intention of giving it up soon. He normally dives with the Club in July timeframe and is a regular attendee at the weekly club Pool training sessions run in the University of Limerick from November to March timeframe. His annual away trips to Red sea and other Dive locations with the “GODS, Golden Oldies Diving Society” operated by Shane Gray continue to drive Ronnie’s desire to continue diving.
