County Longford Sub Aqua Fin Swim 2018

County Longford Scuba Divers  hosted their 5th Annual Fun Fin Swim on the 18th August.   The aim of the event is to promote the safe and enjoyable use of our waterways and to introduce the sport of snorkelling to new members.

This year saw more than 40 participants which was great to see.  The Snorkel Rally has grown year on year due to the support from the surrounding diving clubs of the midlands region, in particular Athlone.  It’s proven to be an excellent way to introduce our sport to new members and give them the opportunity to experience the open water.

Waterways Ireland closed the area to Marine traffic for the duration of the snorkel which  started at Burke’s Lock and finished at Richmond Harbour.

Longford, Roscommon, Banagher, Shannonside, Viking and of course Athlone were well represented.   Longford Triathlon Club assisted with water safety and had their kayakers to guide the snorkelers along the short snorkel route.  The BBQ afterwards in Mc Partland’s was ideal and all the participants were awarded their certificates.  The presentation was made by Bernard Larkin, National Snorkel Officer and Frank McNamee representing Longford Scuba Divers.

The event is an annual one and is supported by Waterways Ireland, Longford Tourism, Longford County Council and the Irish Underwater Council who all help to promote and organise the swim.
