Media Press Release

Blackwater Search and Recovery Unit launch the 2015 Raft Run.

Blackwater Sub Aqua Club was established in 1982. The club is based in Fermoy and currently has a membership of approximately 40 members. Blackwater SAC’s membership is drawn primarily from North and East Cork but some members also hail from SouthTipperary, East Limerick and West Waterford.

Blackwater SAC dives mainly off the East Cork and West Waterford coasts and has an active search and recovery unit which has been involved in over 150 search operations since its foundation. All search and rescue/ recovery activity is carried out on a voluntary basis. The financial cost in maintaining and keeping equipment upgraded is difficult but the local support is second to none. It is expected to have between 20 and 30 rafts entered in the event.

The purpose of the event is to act as a fundraiser for the Search and Rescue unit and to assistwith the purchase of a new rescue boat.

The Raft Run will begin in Ballyhooly and finish at Ashe Quay, Fermoy. The course is approximately 8 kilometres in length with the depth of water varying from a maximum 3 meters to very shallow water giving a challenging but fun run for all.LAUNCH

The safety of all participants is of great importance when running an event such as this. We are delighted to have assistance from Cork North Civil Defence who are providing boat safety cover and first aid, also the Phoenix Kayak Club who will assist with safety cover.

It is hoped that this event will be well supported not just this year but that it will be an annual event. Blackwater SAR is very grateful for the support and advice received from John Wolfe and Mallow Search and Rescue Unit who run a very successful event each March. This may be an opportunity to clean off the raft in the shed and give it a summer run. Fermoy Rowing Club has come on board and is providing changing and showering facilities on the day.

The event is open to everyone over the age of 14. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Depending on the river flow the time taken to complete the course could vary from one to three hours. All participants MUST be wearing properly fitted lifejackets at all times.

To enter the event call Ken on 086 1018424 and he will register your interest, send you your sponsorship cards and provide information on the event. There will be various prize categories, best themed raft, best costumes, best looking raft at the Start and best looking finishing raft. More details will follow on social media creating a fun and memorable event.

Blackwater Search and Recovery are grateful to all sponsors that have come on board to help with this event. We will be utilising our social media outlets on Facebook and the Web Site to acknowledge all sponsors. https://www.facebook.com/BlackwaterSubAquaClub
