On Friday 16th May, the first Regional Dive Rally of the 2014 season kicked off in Cahersiveen. Two boats of divers headed out to dive the Bull Rock on Friday evening and by 10 am on Saturday morning more than 76 divers had registered from 19 different clubs around the country. It was a great gathering of divers, dive boats, cars and camper-vans assembled on the marina at Cahersiveen. Divers, busy preparing for their dives were happily catching up with old friends and looking forward to diving the fantastic dive sites that surround Valencia Island, Doulas Head, Puffin Island and much more. The hosts, Inbhear Sceine, could not have been better prepared or more helpful, giving the initial brief, ensuring that there were enough boats, that everyone was placed on a boat and organizing cylinder fills for everyone. Local knowledge was freely exchanged with great advise being given to all the visitors from far flung locations.
During the whole weekend, the atmosphere was charged with excited and happy divers going out and returning from their dives and exchanging experiences. It was a joy and a privilege to be there. The many Dublin divers who attended were delighted to escape the zero visibility that has been Dublin Bay of late, and although the visibility and sea state was not the best that has ever been seen in the South West, the hospitality and professionalism of the Inbhear Sceine hosts was second to none.
Thanks to all who organized and attended this great event. And the good news is that we still have the South East dive Rally and the West Region Dive Rally to which we can look forward, although the South West Regional weekend will be a hard act to follow.
